Eden Golf Club - Championship Course
Crosby-on-Eden, , Carlisle,
CA6 4RA

Description

The Eden Golf Championship Course is a hidden gem, situated along the banks of the River Eden. Tight tree-lined fairways and numerous natural water hazards mark this course out as a great test of golf. Located just outside Carlisle, five minutes from the M6 and an hours drive from the centre of Newcastle, this course is a must for any discerning golfer who wishes to step outside their comfort zone.

Opened in 1991, Eden has matured into an extremely attractive golf course, receiving great praise from visiting golfers for it's immaculate condition, beautiful environment and above all it's ability to test golfers without being unfair. The fairways wind their way through the fifty acres of woodland around which the course is designed, but tremendous views of the Pennine and Lakeland fells are still afforded on various parts of the course. The river Eden is very much a hazard on holes 4 and 5, where a sliced ball is not advised. Water is in play on several other holes, including the short par four 11th, where a good drive might be on the green, but the slightest deviation will lead to a dropped shot.

On the whole, the course design welcomes the driver, with most fairways open enough to tempt the ambitious, but the ever-present threat of timber will catch out the reckless. The opening 9 is marginally easier than the back 9, where the testing 14th and 15th can be a challenge to your card, just as your concentration is beginning to wane. Wildlife is abundant on the course, with families of swans nesting on the lakes as well as mallards, moorhens, hares and the occasional roe deer.

When the opportunity arose to purchase neighbouring land, plans were developed to build a further nine holes at Eden. The new course offers a contrast in style to the existing Championship Course. Hadrian's course covers 100 acres and includes some tremendous specimen trees as well as steep gullies and undulations which are brought into play on several holes. Whether played on it's own or as part of a 27 hole day, the 3,100 yard, par 36 new course will greatly add to the appeal of a day out at Eden.

Highly praised by members and visitors alike, the Clubhouse at Eden combines warm hospitality in informal surroundings with excellent cuisine. With a central open fire and effective use of timber and stone in it's design, it has a natural warmth and atmosphere. Meals ranging from light snacks to A La Carte are available at the Bar or in the Restaurant overlooking the 18th lake and green.

The Club has extensive practice and coaching facilities including a 16-Bay, floodlit, covered Driving Range, 2 Putting Greens and a dedicated Short Game area with a Chipping Green, Pitching Area and several bunkers. The Club hosts The Eden School of Excellence, sponsored by Eddie Stobart Ltd., and is proving to be a significant influence on junior golf in the region. Golf lessons are available on an individual or group basis and non club members are also welcome.
